The First Experience in an Earthquake I was tired last night. I was also not very peaceful and was roused up suddenly from light sleep. I woke up at 9.15 a.m. Solomon and his mama were still sleeping. About 9.30, when I was looking at the streets from the living room of our 11th floor apartment, I was disturbed by a light noise of vibration. I looked at the bedroom, the sliding doors were vibrating. I thought I stepped on the uneven raised floor and it caused the vibration of the doors. I purposely stepped on the floor and found that it was solid. I then thought that the mischievous Solomon had woken up and was shaking the doors. When I looked into the bedroom, he was still sleeping. As we did not have the experience, I was not aware of that was an earthquake. It was until Mrs. Toyoda came and visited us in the evening, I told her that the doors of the bedroom were shaking in the morning. She said that was an earthquake. It was a very common sight for Japanese. The Japanese Fashion We went to Tobu Store to buy our breakfast after 10 o'clock. After that, we went to the second floor where there was a clothing store. There were gentleman's clothes, lady's dress and children's clothes. The patterns of man's clothes were different from those I found in Singapore. The price was quite reasonable. On the way back to the apartment, I found a small clothing shop beside the hospital next to our apartment. I liked a few pieces of shirts that were rather cheap. But I found that there was no shopkeeper. I shouted for assistance, but nobody appeared. I would come again to buy one or two pieces. We went to Ikebukuro by train at noon. After lunch, we went to the games arcade. Solomon enjoyed playing games in the arcade. As Mrs. Toyoda would be coming to see us, we went back after three o'clock. Solomon went to bed after we were back at the apartment. He might be tired. Talk With Our Hearts Mrs. Toyoda called at 6.45 p.m. to tell us that she would be visiting us in 15 minutes' time. She came punctually and went home at 9.25. Mrs. Toyoda had bought the tickets for the World Expo Package. We would meet at Tokiwadai Station at 6.30 a.m. tomorrow. After taking a train to Ikebukuro, we would transfer to Tokyo Station. We would then take the 7.46 a.m. Tokaido Shinkansen (Bullet Train) and arrive at Nagoya at 9.26 a.m. Mrs. Toyoda reminded us not to take breakfast tomorrow. She told us that we would take our breakfast onboard the bullet train. After learning from us that we had gone to Tobu Store, 99-Yen Shop and Ikebukuro these few days, Mrs. Toyoda drew a map and showed us the way to Kami-Itabashi Station. There were larger supermarket and stores around Kami-Itabashi. On the way to Kami-Itabashi, we would pass the Educational Science Centre. Although we went to Tokyo Disneyland yesterday, I had not seen Mr. Toyoda since Tuesday when he brought me to the Rotary Club meeting. I started to be home sick. He went to the Rotary Club for meeting again this evening. Mrs. Toyoda came and chatted with us for more than two hours. She also told us some Japanese culture and custom. After the conversation, I felt better. |
