The Flatbread From His Heart
China, Here We Come (11)

19.11.2008

I woke up before the 6.15 morning call. It was dark outside.
We had the buffet breakfast. Xiang and I went to the canteen at 7 o'clock. The dining table was just for two persons. It was the first time that Xiang and I could have the breakfast by ourselves for the last ten days.

Although I have joined the opera group for eight months, I still could not adapt to this new environment. I was very confused when my son changed his mind not to come with me. We gored silently until 19 October 2008. I watch a short newsreel at the Channel News Asia. The newsreel was produced by him and the school teammates. I was very happy with their effort. I told him that he had done a good job. Then I did not mention the trip in front of him anymore.

When I knew that Yueli had arranged Xiang to share room with me, I accepted it. I thought I would decide what to do again after our performances in Shantou and Jieyang. If it would not be a pleasant trip, I would stay back in Chaozhou City for a few days and come back to Singapore. After getting along with Xiang for two days, I found he was a pleasant person and easy to get along. But he was popular in the group, therefore he was always invited to join the table with only one more vacant seat and I became a 'lonely soul'.

I had had the strong sixth sense since I was young. I did not like to say out my feeling and my presentiment. I remembered two days before our performance in Singapore; I had the terrible 'dream'. When I went to the theatre that evening, I sensed the strange atmosphere. I seemed like a god of plague floating at the backstage. The actors' lines of "you marry without your heart" and "I don't want anything" were running on my mind.

On the day we arrived in Zhejiang on 16 November, I was asked to sit with the directors. I usually did not like to take meal on the same table with the VIP. But I just joined them that day and we were told that we would go to the same table for our meals from that day on. I was glad that I did not to be a lonely soul any more.

We visited the Shuang Long (Double Dragons) scenic spot in Jinhua.
Shuang Long Caves consists of the outer cave and inner cave. There are two stalactites at the outer cave which formed like the heads of dragons. Therefore the name was Shuang Long Dong (Double Dragons Cave). We had to lay flat on the small boat to enter to the inner cave. It took only fifteen seconds. The boat took four persons of the small sizes, but only two of the fat persons.

When I entered to the inner cave, the staff told me that the cave would be warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The young girls also told me to take care of my camera as water always drips from the roof. There were many service persons who took good care and concern of me which made me felt very good.

There were all shapes of stalactite and stalagmite. They looked beautiful but it was too dark to take pictures.

When we got out of the cave, I bought two sets of clapper. When I went to Henan Province, China in May 2008, the students performed clapper talk which impressed me very much. There were five designs, The Five Friendlies, of the clapper which were the official mascots of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

After visiting Shuang Long Cave, we arrived at the Zhuge Bagua Village an hour later. Zhuge Bagua Village is at the 18 km west of Lanxi City. There were about three thousand people who were the descendants of Zhuge Liang, a famous statesman and strategist. This is the largest place where the Zhuge Liang descendants stayed together.

The village was built in the design of an octagon. There is a clock in the pond of the centre of the village. There are eight lanes and the houses were built spreading out like radii from the centre.

Some of the villagers are skillful in the Chinese printings and calligraphy. The Chinese printing scrolls and fans with calligraphy were sold in the village and the price was reasonable.

We went around the village until 1 p.m. While walking to the restaurant at the entrance for our lunch, Xiang offered me a flatbread. I usually do not take any snack before meal. Therefore I wanted to keep the flatbread in my shoulder bag. But Xiang insisted that I had to take it while it was just out of the oven. He thanked me for taking care of him for the last few days. He might see me walking around the village and taking pictures by myself, a person out of this world.

We continued our journey to Daciyan scenic spot in the afternoon. It was about 24 km to the south of Jiande City.

The temples of the Daciyan were built by the cliff. They looked like hanging by the mountain.

There were cable cars to reach the temples. But I did not go with the group. There were about ten of us did not join the group. We waited at the feet of the mountain for about an hour. When the group came back, Yueli gave me two branches of maple leaves in green and red. I liked to keep maple leaves.

We stayed in the Dragon Moon Bay Hotel in Jiande City.

We had to packed our belongings for the next two days in the smaller bag and keep our luggage in the coach until we arrived at the airport two days later. It was because we would be staying in the Red Lantern Rural Home Land of Yaolin Town in Tonglu, Zhejiang. The coach would not be able to go in to the villas. It took a distant from us to walk from the entrance to the villas. Therefore we had to carry our necessary belonging in the smaller bag.
