Splendor
Mental Health

Pastor Tze (謝道泉牧師) taught me Luther's Catechism every Tuesday a few months before my baptism in 1966.

I always remember the story of my Bible Study.
The devil took Jesus to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor.
"All this I will give you," the devil said, "if you will bow down and worship me."
Jesus said to the devil, "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.'"

I used to do my best either on my work or my voluntary activities. I tried my best to make it perfect. Hence, many senior friends and colleagues loved me very much. We have to deal with different kinds of characters. Some will help you to give full play of your potentials. It hence produces good result with our work. Some will try ways and means to make you fail. Some will make use of you to take credit and step you down after that.

I had a strong belief in my religion and good foundation in my moral education. Although there were many people admire me, there were also some people attack me. But I still remain as who I am in helping people.

I joined Singapore Jaycees City Chapter as a member in 1979. There were many senior members who looked after me and helped to train me. I learned a lot of techniques and skills in becoming a good leader. There were five Chapters then and all spoke English. I was then assigned to help in establishing a Mandarin speaking Chapter on my second year in Jaycees. After the Mandarin Chapter was formed and went on for a year, I requested to be transferred back to City Chapter on my forth year.

When I was back to City Chapter, I had a discussion with a few members on the leadership. We planned to train up future leadership. We had to develop our members and helped them to achieve their goals. Therefore, we decided the Chapter President would hold the office for only a year. After stepping down, he would help the new President. At that time, I spent much time to assist the incoming President Stanley. He was the President for 1983. I was then the 1984 President.

The micro-computer was popular at that time. I took up a programming course at Tiong Bahru Community Centre then. After that, two of my classmates and I remained and helped the Community Centre to design a Course Registration System. It allowed the staff to use it for enrollment and the data of course participants could be retrieved from the computer. A few months later, we were approached to move to Tanjong Pagar Community Centre to help its Computer Club. But three of us decided to leave and to go back to our own Community Centre.

Three of us ever received awards from Mr. Chng Jit Kun. I received an additional award of Outstanding Member. When I walked near Mr. Chng, I heard he found out from the Chairman of the Computer Club the reason that I got that award. The Chairman briefed him. Then he turned to me and gave me the award with smile. I was very touched at that moment. I felt that I was appreciated and respected. Thank you very much the Chairman and Mr. Chng.

After returning to Buona Vista Community Centre, I was made the Chairman of the Computer Club by a few lecturers from NUS. They trained me and encouraged me. I finally took up of the post. It was a good time to work with Dr. Ang Kok Peng and the NUS lecturers. When we had to get additional micro-computers, we put up the proposal and tender. We later went ahead to buy the computer sets. When the purchase was settled, the staff told us that usually Headquarters did the purchase. As our tender was very well written, HQ let us do it.

When the number of applications to our computer course was too large, Dr. Ang discussed with me to train additional computer teachers. He had the confidence in me. I then trained up a few teachers and we made opportunities for more people to take up the course as soon as we could. At one of the New Year BBQ gathering, Dr. Ang asked me what else we needed. I told him we needed a CCTV installed in the computer room. He found out the reason and told me it would be done. Actually I had requested the Management Committee and was rejected.

I did not like to receive any award n recent years. I learned from the news that there were people fighting against each other while doing voluntary work. There was news of laying murderous hands on committee. It was sad!

I took part at the Chingay Parade as a volunteer manager for three years from 2011. On one of the years, an elderly couple came to my unit to help me. Then the old lady started to command me to do this and to do that. I was very surprised. Then another volunteer manager came and asked them to help in another unit.
That volunteer manager told me that both the husband and wife ever received award as outstanding volunteers. I was very sad.
What sort of award? Why the old lady did not find out where she was? You received an award and you could start to command anybody to work!

I am thankful to my wife. We ever rejected offer to be voluntary leadership. We do not like to praise people. We do no like to fight against people. We have gone through the days of splendor. We have seen different faces. We prefer to be with the people and help those who need and who are willing to accept our help.

I am sorry to turn down the nominations.
