Cherki Card Game
Way of Stimulating Our Brain

I used to attend the Pot Luck Bonding Club at the Residents' Corner of Residents' Committee at Block 30 Teban Gardens every Friday.

I learned from an Indian grandma the game of Cherki. Cherki is a card game of the Paranakan.

The Indian grandma used to packs of cards and there were all together 120 cards with 30 different designs. There were 4 cards for each design.

Then she arranged the cards into 8 rows with 14 cards for each row. The balance 8 cards set aside were spare-cards.

The game is to pair up every two cards with the same design. She started to take from either ends of the rows of cards with the same design and put aside. When she could not get the pair of cards, she would get one from the spare-cards to match. Sometimes the consecutive cards might be the same design.

When all the cards were set in pair, the game would be over. She played five times and finally made it.

The card game is good to train up our brain and our sharp-eyed. It helps to improve our judgment and to be alert and observant. It is ideal for the elderly in passing their times and in preventing dull-witted.

It is a little confuse for the beginner.
For those who can read Chinese, it will be easy to recognise cards with Chinese characters, such as Ten Thousands (一萬) to Nine Thousands (九萬), and the Golden Flower (金花).
The other three designs with pink colour can be differentiate easily.
The other designs look like the bird and circle, etc, will need some efforts to see the differences.

When I started to play this card game, I tried to find out the difference on top of each card.
Cards with either a triangle of an arc at the corner.
Cards with the teeth of a saw.
Cards with the moon of the first or last quarters.
Cards with half of the moon at the right hand side, or with two half-of-a-moon, etc.

When making use of the spare cards, we have to observe that whether we are able to pair up any cards after that. Like while if there are three cards can be paired up, We have to consider which cards to pair up will be better for our next step.

Practice makes perfect. After playing the game for many times, I can recognise the designs better. I am also more alert to observe those cards can be paired up.
