Taking A Break
Conserve Strength

I have changed the way of my voluntary works these two year. I used to have a make-up day if the day of my voluntary activity was a public holiday. Nowadays I just skipped it.

For those activities used to be on alternate weeks, I now changed to twice a month. When there is a five-week month, I will skip the day on the fifth week.

The Chinese New Year's Day in 2014 was on the last day of January. I decided to have the month of February as my break and no voluntary activity for me.

Monday

I visited each of the two Eldercare Centres on alternate Monday. If there is a fifth Monday of the month, I will take a rest.

I carried out massage service at one of the Centres.

I have been servicing this Centre for more than five years. There are only six elderly receiving the massage service nowadays. I have discussed with the Centre that I would not take in anymore newcomer.

On the voluntary day, I preferred to arrive at the Centre early. Otherwise, I would be in a hurry to do the massage for six persons within one hour and thirty minutes.

Besides, I wished to finish my service before the afternoon tea time. At least there would be others in the activity hall.

Monday

Our Elderly Volunteers at the Keep Fit Exercise Session

I led the Keep Fit Exercise Session at another Eldercare Centre. The other Keep Fit Exercise Session I had at the Residents' Committee (RC) Centre on Saturday that we needed to spend the whole hour for the session. But at this Eldercare Centre we repeated the basic ten steps for that hour.

The Manager of the Eldercare Centre Anita visited our RC Keep Fit Exercise Session personally in June 2012. After sitting through our session, the Manager invited me to conduct that for her Centre. I brought four elderly volunteers to assist four months later. When we arrived at the Centre during those weeks, the Manager would request the elderly to stop other activities and join the session. If there was any other volunteer, they would stop their activities with the elderly too.

Anita was transferred to another Centre by the end of July 2013. Since then, it seemed like without "government". When our team arrived, there were mahjongs still on. I wondered we had to withdraw ourselves!

There were a few elderly following our exercise closely. Some of them were really sleepy because it was after their lunch.

We were requested to extend the time from one hour to one hour and fifteen minutes in January. We then conducted the sing-along session after the exercise. They loved the oldies. Once while I was singing a Hokkien oldies, an elderly took money from her purse and came to me. I had to ask the staff to help me out. I heard she mumbling, "Oh poor him. He has a lot of children."

Tuesday Morning I applied massage therapy for the elderly grandma next door.

I started helping her massage twice a week in November 2011. As the maid knew nursing skills, I thought her how to massage too. So she could do the massage on other days. After the maid returning to her home town and coming back in August 2012, I attended to grandma once a week.

Since I accepted to help out at the Karaoke Session at PPH Community Services Centre on Tuesday afternoon in 2013, I had to finish my massage therapy for grandma by 11.30 am. Then I could make it for the Karaoke Session. If the maid could not finish the clean-up for grandma early, I had to skip the therapy.

There were improvements for grandma. She was a vegetable patient. She could now pull my hand with strength. She could also lift up her head so that I could massage her neck at the back. Sometimes she tried to say something, but she could not talk.

I had experience with patient who was in coma. He recovered rapidly when the family got involved in caring. Even the doctor was surprised.

Tuesday Afternoon

I assisted at the Karaoke Session at PPH Community Services Centre (CSC) every Tuesday afternoon. I recorded the participants and arranged their turns of singing.

I liked to bring a small towel to clean the microphone once used by the participant.

If you are not interested in karaoke, it would be bored for you to be the DJ. You had to insert the disc, take care of the sound, etc.

But I always said to the co-worker that whatever we did, we had to do it as for God and not for men. Sometimes only the person had good power of understanding would take it.

Wednesday was my rest day last year 2013. I did not take up any voluntary activity on that day.

Since I resigned from the voluntary activity from Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital at the end of last year. I then take Thursday as my rest day temporarily. It was because I had to go ahead with my plan in taking photographs along the Singapore River on Wednesday.

Friday Morning

Attending the Breakfast Meeting at PPH SCS.

After greeting to everybody, I would look for the newcomer. If the newcomer came alone, I tried to get someone to chat with.

For those from China, I tried to get someone from the same province to chat with if possible.

I used to play game with a few elderly grandmas. Now I stopped.

I met the Manager last few days and had a chat with him. I would like to help some of the people playing the game Rummy-O. Those people who were not familiar with the game and nobody liked to play with them.

Friday Afternoon

Attending the Port Luck Club at the neighbouring Resident's Committee. Chatting with neighbours and Malay friends.

When I saw the number of people grew, I wanted to withdraw myself. But the organiser Winnie said that I must still attend.

I am not interested in playing game anymore. I would be able to cha with the Malay friends.

The RC Chairman wished that I could invite the Malay friends to attend our Keep Fit Exercise Session. It would be at the RC Office twice monthly on Saturday. I would like to do so.

Saturday

On every first and third Saturday afternoon, we had the Keep Fit Exercise Session. It has started since October 2011.

The Exercise was tailored made for the elderly. They could sit and do the exercise. We started with the basic ten steps. We could repeat the ten steps within an hour. As we included more steps, we could only do once nowadays.

I requested the participants to do what they could when they were at home. They might only carry out the basic ten steps everyday.

There was an Indian lady told us that after doing it for a year, she did not suffer from knee pain while walking any more.

Other than my photography at the Singapore River, I skipped many activities. I ever skipped the Chinese New Year Celebrations organised by a few organisations.

After being a voluntary worker for many years, this was the first time that I wanted to take a break for myself.
