A Pleasure to Help Others
The Origin of Happiness

I went to the Senior Citizens' Home to serve lunch to the elderly with a group of volunteers in June. Prior to lunch time, I mingled with the elderly. Many of them did not believe that I was above 60 years old.

They thought I was much younger and I was joking. I also thought that they tried to make me happy by saying that I was only 50 years old.

I mixed with them well in a few minutes and we chatted about everything. Then they told me that if I wished to give them any present, give them an Angbao. Angbao is a red package with money inside. Even if there were two dollars in the Angbao, it was better than giving them a package of rice. They were not that strong to carry a package of rice home. They asked me to pray that there would always be sponsors for lunch on Saturdays.

When I heard about sponsors for lunch, I thought of a song titled If I Have A Million Dollars. The song lingered on my mind for many days.

They were amazed to see me looked young and did not have much grey hairs. They tried to find out the secret of keeping young and asked what food I took. I said that I always remember Rejoice Always. An elderly then seriously asked me whether I was very happy after helping others.

After a short pause, I answered, “Yes, yes! That was what we found it a pleasure to help others.”

While talking to the elderly, I was thinking of what I used to learn when I was young. I learned from the Moral Education at Primary School that “Find it a Pleasure to Help Others (助人为快乐之本).” But we always forget about the source of happiness. It was so easy to find and we tried so hard to look for it.
