I got worked up lately after reading news about Buddhist monk
Venerable Ming Yi (明义法师) and
Pastor Kong Hee (康希牧师). Both of the news was related to money. Money!
Although someone said that `You can't make everything possible with money',
but we may not be able to anything without money.
About 20 years ago, I worked in the Thai Good News Centre. Once I received
a cheque of $50/= from Gospel Recordings. It was only $50/=. But it was then
about 10% of my take-home pay.
I was uneasy to receive the cheque. I called Rita of Gospel Recordings.
After thanking her, I requested to withdraw that cheque and make it
for the Thai Good News Centre.
She explained to me that their organisation would keep certain amount of
savings for the next financial year and donate the balance to other parties.
When they discussed about the donations that year, Pastor Lim thought
that I deserved to receive one of them. He said that my salary was low
and I used to travel to their organisation to collect the Gospel
cassette tapes for the Thai people. He thought that I worked hard and
loved the Thai people very much; my effort should be appreciated and encouraged.
Rita also said that if I was uneasy to receive the money,
I should just accept it and donate it to the Centre.
We visited one of our lecturers when we studied in the Bible College.
We admired the house he stayed. We noticed that there was a massage
chair too. Our lecturer was a pastor too. He said that he did not
have so much money to buy the house. It was bought by church members
for him to stay. The members were pleased with his hard work and
bought the massage chair for him too release his tiredness.
I was glad with the members. They were concerned about their pastor
and did not make him or wish him to work like a donkey.
When I worked in the Thai Good News Centre, I was also well-treated by
a number of our Thai friends. There were a few female students
used to come early for the afternoon English Class with lot of
meals. They would invite me to take lunch with them before teaching.
I later found out that they were told by their Singaporean husbands.
Their husbands came to the Centre and they knew that I resigned from
my highly paid position and was willingly to help the Thai people.
Hence, they asked their wives to take care of my lunch.
There was a grandma who accompanied her grandchild to study in Singapore.
She insisted to make shirts for me by herself. She also got me a box of
nasi lemak every Sunday morning when she came for the English Class.
She bought the Tiger Pawns, cooked, removed the shell and added
to the box of nasi lemak.
One day she gave me a name card of his son. He was the manager of a
tour company in Hatyai, Thailand. He knew about me when his mother
told him about the English Class. He asked his mother to take care
of me and would like to meet me if it happened I visited Hatyai.
Although my salary was low when I worked in the Centre,
I was glad with the kindness of the Thai people towards me.
I assisted to establish the Centre in 1989. I resigned from my job in 1990.
Then I took up a one-year full-time study in the Bible College.
After that, I worked full time in the Centre for almost one and
half a year.
We started the Centre from zero When the Centre became popular, there were
more and more volunteers. One day, a Chinese Thai couple came to our Centre.
The husband was studying in our Bible College and the wife came along.
They told me that our lecturer Rev. Dr. George Onggo Sanusi asked them
to come and help me. Hence, the wife Suttiporn would like to be a volunteer.
She was getting $100/= per month as the transport allowance.
Within a few months, she requested us to pay for her English Course as well
as $400/= monthly allowance. In a year's time, She got $700/= monthly which was
equivalent to my take-home pay. She was too ambitious. She wanted to be
the Director which I rejected her. She then made use of ways and means to squeeze
me out. In order to maintain a harmony working environment, I resigned
from the Centre at the end of 1992.
I resumed my job in the Computer Company five months after leaving the Centre.
Soon I was told that the staff and members of the Centre were unhappy with
the arrogant attitude of Suttiporn. One day when I was requested
to give my opinion in dismissing Suttiporn, I agreed with the Committee.
She was then dismissed immediately. When our Director Sister Salli
met me after that. She wept when she knew the reason of my resignation.
A few days ago I read the news of Pastor Kong Hee in the Chinese press.
Pastor Derek Dunn gave his comment on Pastor Kong:
He was a person who devoted himself and with strong faith.
He worked hard for more than twenty years.
They lived the life style of their achievement.
It was written in the Book of Romans, Chapter 12 Verse 20:
If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.
你不可为恶所胜,反要以善胜恶。
When I was resigning from Thai Good News Centre at the end of 1992,
I was approached to set up a Centre to serve the Thai people in
Golden Mile Complex.
The two brothers who persuaded me said that their boss was a businessman
who loved God very much. He was unable to run a Centre himself and
hoped that I would do so.
I was not the type of person who aimed for money only.
I am a person with morality. I did not accept because I thought
I should be fight against our Centre.
I did not know who the boss was, but I was touched.
When I recalled that invitation, I wept.
Thank you very much, Boss.
Thank you for your love to our Lord.
Thank you for your concern to the Thai people.
Thank you for your appreciation and loving care.
May God richly bless you!
