It has been about a year since I became a volunteer worker with the ElderCare
Centres in Jurong. It was always a happy time with the elders. I was glad to
see some of the elders had become happier than the first time we met.
Some of the elders called me as "doctor" initially. I explained that I was not a doctor.
Then they called me as 'Xianshen' (the Traditional Chinese Medicine physician),
'Shifu' (Master in Physical Therapist) or 'Laoshi' (Teacher). They have experienced
the relieving of pain and tiredness, they might then think that I was specialised in
medical science and addressed me as a doctor.
After a few months massage treatment, some of them told me that they were better
than before. They have the confidence in me. When they complained about their
physical problems, I always pointed out the problems could be caused by their
'bad' habits. They started to live a healthier lifestyle and avoided the unnecessary
health problem.
The elder friends always told me that which the massage techniques helped them
much, so that I could apply different matters on different persons.
The way I do the massage for them has gradually differed from the steps
mentioned in the book.
I always need to read more reference books in order to solve the physical problems
mentioned by the elder friends. Therefore I visited the Community Library more
often in the recent months. I read books of reflexology, massage and shiatsu.
I learned both the Eastern and Western techniques. I also bought books when I
went to the bookshops.
Six years ago, I bought a model of human body in order to know better in providing
massage treatment for my nephew. I kept the model in the cupboard after my nephew
for years since he went back to China. I have recently used it very often.
I also made use of the Acu-Reflex Pen in relieving the pains for the elders.
Some people wondered what method I applied in the massage treatment.
It was the combination of Western technique and Chinese massage (中华推拿).
I self-learned the Western massage in 1984. I later learned the Hand and Foot
Reflexology.
I attended the intensive massage course with Sebastian Liew in October 2002.
A few months later in 2003, I attended a Traditional Chinese Medicine course in
Acupoints. After serving the elder friends for a few months, I applied
the techniques of massage, reflexology and acupressure at the same time.
