Mr. Xue Zeyou was born in Guiling Town of Jieyang, China.
I knew about him from the Internet forum for the Teochew Opera fans
in early 2007.
I did not have any correspondence with him.
I learned about his Teochew Opera singing through the
video of Teochew Opera Fans' Gatherings.
He imitated the singing of the famous Teochew artist Mr. Hong Miao.
Mr. Xue released his first Teochew Opera audio CD in November 2007.
There were two songs of the Teochew opera, The Argument on Memorial
by Yang Lingpo (杨令婆辩本) and Yang Ziliang's Marriage Proposal (杨子良讨亲).
As he used the nickname of 洪腔传人(Imparted of Hong's singing),
there were some people making irresponsible remarks. I was unhappy with
those remarks. They did not help to promote the art of Teochew Opera,
but talked with a big mouth only.
I attended the International Teochew Opera Festival held in Shantou last
November. After that, we went to Jieyang. I made appointment and met
my friend Mr. Lin Hong when we were in Jieyang. When Lin Hong visited me in
the hotel, he brought together with him Mr. Xue Zeyou. I was glad and
surprised to see him who purposely drove a long journey from Dongwan
to Jieyang to meet me.
We went to the Teahouse and had a drink and talk. I was interested what
he felt when he read those remarks in the forum. He did not take the
remarks very hard and just carry on his interest in singing Teochew Opera
as usual.
I liked the way Mr. Xue handle those remarks. Enjoy our interest in singing
Teochew Opera and ignore those nonsense.
That was the first time we met. That was also the time he had just released
his second work, the Teochew Opera video.
One of the two discs had the two songs of his first audio CD.
But we could see his performance on the video CD.
