Are You In, Grandma?

After taking part in the Third International Teochew Opera Festival in Shantou, some of our troupe members continued the journey to Zhejiang.

The weather was colder and colder from the day we arrived in Hanzhou, Zhejiang. We had to put on more and more clothing. Our last stop in Zhejiang was the "Grandma's Home" in Tonglu. "Grandma's Home" was the nickname of the resort of Red Lantern Rural Home Land. I thought we would be feeling warmer when we were in Grandma's Home.

When we reached the resort, we were received by a handsome young man. He took us for a tour in the Home before checking in to the guest rooms. There were shop houses of ironmongery, bamboo articles weaver, wooden barrel trusser, wine-making, pottery, etc. We were delighted to see the different 'business' which we seldom see in Singapore. Then we came to an ancestral temple. The guide told us that we could not take photos in the temple.

A young woman explained to us what we saw in the temple. She then asked us to worship the statue which she claimed that it was our ancestor. I did not follow because I am a Christian. Besides, the way she worshipped was unusual.

She should has good manner and not to ask the visitors to worship the statue. How could she any how do so? She should respect the visitors as we might have different believes. It was also very rude to hang two big pieces of cloth at both side of the statue. That brought disgrace to the 'ancestor'.

She saw that most of us acted whatever she said and then she stopped the worship. She said, "Enter inside!" I wondered what was on behind the big piece of cloth. Some of our members went in and some walk out of the temple. I was unhappy to see Xiang followed some members and went in. Suddenly I recalled the day when we visited the Great Wall in 2005. There was also a "mobile temple" at the foot of the Great Wall. I walked out the temple and saw the other members had gone. I waited for Xiang outside the temple.

The handsome guide asked me to follow our members to walk away. I did not do so. He then asked me whether I was the group leader. I told him I was not. He asked again why I was still waiting outside the temple. I told him that my brother was inside and I had to wait for him.

There were about ten members in the temple. I was rather uneasy. Then I heard our group leader Mr. Tay shouted, "Let's go, let's go!" I was glad that he came back. I told him that there were members behind the cloth. He then shouted and asked them to come out.

The members came out and they were talking about the matter. I asked the handsome guide whether the resort managed by the Government or a private company. He said that it was contracted and managed by a private company. Before I continued with more questions, he ran away and out of sight.

There was a usual trick for that "mobile temple". The guide would say, "You are very lucky today that you have the opportunity to meet our master ...". I read the similar case happened in Jiuzhaigou where the local tourists fought with the people of the temple.

There was a saying of 'a spark of fire may burn a prairie'. That temple was not the Buddhist temple and not the Taoist temple. It was the trick of the swindlers. The Government should seriously take action to stop it. Otherwise, when the foreigner tourists fight with the 'temple', it would be an international story!

When I was interviewed by friends in Beijing, I told them that our children might not be close to China anymore. To its worst, they did not have 'China' on their mind. They told me that we should bring our children to visit China more often. But how would this type of swindler business affect our children when they faced it?

That was a Chinese saying the Premier Wen ever mentioned. Who would be assisting the elder grandpa to set the Country free?
