The Treasure
My First Copy of Bible

I have many copies of Bible which are in Chinese, English or Thai.

For the Chinese Bible, there are Chinese Union Version, Today's Chinese Version, Chinese Reference Bible and Chinese Study Bible. Although I have moved from Queenstown to Holland Village, and then to Teban Gardens again, I did not throw away any of my Bible. When there was any clearing, all copies of my Bible were kept.

My first copy of Bible was the Chinese and English Version New Testament from the Gideons Internationals. I got it when I was in Pre-University in 1964.

I was then studying in the Chinese High School. When our School announced that there was free Bible for us, my classmate Sin Bin took a copy for me. I did not know what the Bible was. Sin Bin told me that we could use it to improve our English as it was in Chinese and English. Therefore I kept it as a book for improving my English.

There is a saying, "We can find houses of gold within books." But I was not aware of any treasure in the Bible.

Nine months after I completed my pre-university studies, I was baptised. I received a Bible from the church at the baptism. I started to read Bible. I read the words, but I did not understand the true meaning.

At that time, Pastor Nelson invited me to study in Bible School. Although I would be sponsored and given some living allowances, I did not take the offer as I had to support my younger brother's secondary studies. I ran away from God, but I was captured by God 23 years later. I resigned from the high-salary senior position and took up one year study in the Singapore Bible College at the age of 43.

I seemed suddenly get the true meaning by reading the Bible during the one-year study in the College. I started to find the treasure from the Bible after attending the class conducted by Rev Dr George Onggo Sanusi (翁绳佑老师). I then found out more and more treasures.

It seemed like we were given a piece of jade stone. We looked at it and knew that it was a jade stone. We left the stone anywhere we liked carelessly. We would only value it until the day we broke it and found the jade inside.

I have learned from the Bible how to conduct ourselves and how to be the beloved of many people. I learned how to overcome difficulties and learned the true meaning of love.

Many Chinese thought that Christian do not love and respect their parents. But it was written in the Bible
Children, obey your parents, this is the right thing to do because God has placed them in authority over you. Honour your father and mother. This is the first of God's Ten Commandments that ends with a promise. And this is the promise: that if you honour your father and mother, yours will be a long life, full of blessing.

When I gave a copy of Bible to my nephew, I wrote the above Bible teaching in the Bible. One the days he was preparing to return to China, I asked him to give me back the Bible if he decided not to take it home. And he kept it with him. Sometimes we do not realise that we own a treasure until the time comes.
