Light Up Their Lives
The Days With the Elders

We had a project carried out at the ElderCare Centre June this year. It was one of our activities of the YAH! Community College. The Centre is the NTUC day-care centre for the elders. The old people come in the morning and go back in the afternoon or evening. The different between the centre and the old folk home is that the old people in the Centre can be with their families at night.

The main activity of our project was to carry out a massage session for the elders. Many elders accepted our service and many of them asked whether we would be back.

One of our group members Yan Quan and I went beck to the Centre three weeks later. We decided to provide the message service to the elder regularly at alternate Monday. I learned the European-style massage many years ago. Yan Quan was good at the traditional Chinese-style massage. Although I ever took up a course on Traditional Chinese Medicine, I did not put in much effort on the Chinese-style massage.

When I carried out the massage for the elderly, I usually started by the shoulder, and then arm and wrist. I did not massage their waist or legs. Only a handful complained of back pain, I then massage their waists.

When I massaged their arms, I would sit in front of them. Therefore I could talk to them. In the first few times many elders told me that they were useless old folks. As I had been attended the course organised by YAH! Community College and learned to be happy, I told the elders that they were great. I was also benefit from the influence of my Christianity belief, so I always motivate them with positive thinking.

I told them that they had spent their lives to bring up their children and they did contribute much for the nation. They are willing to come to the day-care Centre and let their children to work with a peaceful mind, they are great parents.

The teaching of Bible light up my life and light up the elders' lives too. They do not mention that they are useless anymore. I always ask them which part of the body where they feel uncomfortable. I will then apply more pressure on the relevant part when I do the massage. Some of them thought that I was from any Chinese Physician shop. Some of them thought that I was a doctor. Sometimes, we exchanged ideas on living a better life.

Sometimes they told me that there seems to be a current going through their body. Sometimes they told me the body was more relaxed after the massage. Sometimes we talk about the past. We did not have water heaters years ago. There was no comfortable bed when we were young. They would share with me the type of food the elders cannot take when they suffered from certain sickness. They told me how to cook certain food with an easier method. We became more positive after the leisure chat. I spoke Teochew and Hokkien to them. I spoke Mandarin or English to a few of them. To my surprise, I talked to an old construction lady-worker (Hongtoujin) in Cantonese which I seldom speak so fluently. Oh! God is great!

Yesterday, I started to provide massage session at the day-care centre for the elders in Taman Jurong. The elders told me that they heard me a long time ago. They were so happy to see me there. In fact, Yan Quan has stopped going to the day-care Centre in Jurong West from the beginning of September. I was then carried out the massage by myself. I was also busy in preparation of the Teochew Opera performance staged on 9th and 10th day of September. Therefore I delayed to serve in two Centres until the performance was over.

On the first day I carried out the massage service in the Centre of Taman Jurong, I told the supervisor that I would do it for an elder in the Centre. She is the owner of a coffee stall in our hawker centre. I saw her years ago when I move to Teban Gardens in 1986. I met her few weeks ago and she told me that she was in the Centre.

The elders in the Centre of Jurong West are lesser than those in Taman Jurong. I usually completed the service for all the elders who wished to have the massage in Jurong West within the one and a half hour's time. There were more elders in the Centre of Taman Jurong. Those who suffered from stroke were arranged to have the massage yesterday. Some of them could not even turn their arms or open up their hands. I spent more times on those elders. When I was leaving the Centre, I saw a few of them wishing to have the massage service. I hope I could make it for many of them the next time I go there.

I wish that those who know how to massage would like to contribute their service to the elders. Giving out our love for the old people to light up their lives.
