Knowing You, Knowing Me
An Activity of YAH! Community College

We learned how to manage our old age in the YAH! Community College and a selective course of either magic class or physical exercise class. On 26 April, we visited three organisations. There were Bukit Batok Fire Station, Boys' Town and Silver Circle, a elder day care centre.

Children, behalf well!

OK, teacher!

Fire Station

We attended briefing in the fire station. We learned about the types of fire engines, the equipements used, the organisation and the handling of calls.

We were specially reminded what to do when we the elder face a fire.

When we face a fire, be calm. Call 995 to inform the operator where is the fire, and how serious is the fire. Then take instruction from the operator.

    Handling the fire:

  1. If it is not very serious, put off the fire with water. If we cannot put off the fire, evacuate from the place. If there is smoke, cover with a wet towel, bend down and leave the place.

  2. If a gas tank is on fire, evacaute immediately and call the fire station.

  3. If contact with any chemicals, rinse thoroughly.

We know the firemen's work better after the briefing. Their work is risky and tought. They have to be quick in movement as every second counts. They have to be calm and make quick decision.

Boys' Town

Boys' Town was established in 1948 as a charitable institution the Brothers of St. Gabriel. It dedicated to providing youths between the age of 11 to 18 with guidance, shelter, education, vocational training and practical living skills. The boys are primarily from large, troubled, single parent and financially needy families as well as those those who find themselves in various states of fiddiculties.

Brother Vincent from the Brothers of St. Gabriel and Mr. W.T. McDermott, an Australian philanthropist, first came up with the idea of setting up a Boys' Town similar to the one in the United States. They met at the Changi Prison Camp during the Japanese Occupation. Mr. McDermott expressed his greatest aspiration to have a Boys' Town for Singapore. They embarked on this project after their release from Changi Prison.

Boys' Town procides direct care for the needy children. It is different from the Singapore Boys' Home.
The Boys' Home is a restorative rehabilitation centre for juveniles of ages as young as 13 years old in Singapore. As the juveniles are too young to be sentenced to jail for their offenses, they would be admitted to the Boys' Home instead.

We admired the brothers and the philanthropist who had the great idea to set up Boys' Town. It helps the needy children to have a good living environment. The education and training provided for the children make them a good citizen of the country.

Silver Circle - Daycare Centre for the Elder

There are trained staff and volunteer workers.
The centre also provides home care service.

The centre provides a caring, supportive and conducive environment where the elders can enrich their lives during the day when their children are away at work.

The centre provides value-added services such as physiotherapy, counselling, home care equipment loan, stc.

As we realised the old age problem of our country and looked for solutions, it is a good idea to have a day care centre. The elders could stay in the centre when their children are at work. They could have friends and games in the centre to pass their times and children could have a peaceful mind at work. In the evening, they will be home with their children.
