Using the Resources with Wisdom
My Teacher Satish

After servicing the Thai community in Singapore for three years, I joined my former company Singapore Computer Systems again. I was posted to the Computer and Information Systems Department (CISD) of our client Ministry of the Environment. There was a manageress Mdm Ha from our company managed a group of our colleagues. Mr. Satish was the Deputy Director of CISD. I worked with Satish for 2-3 years until he went to England for further study.

Satish was a person who had wisdom in using the resources.
Once there was a user wished to have a computer application system. The user talked to Satish through the phone and an appointment was made.
Satish then discussed with me on the request. He told me his ideas and I knew that those ideas could meet the request. After contributing my ideas, we had the solution on mind. Satish was pleased to see we could meet the user's request.

When the user came to the appointment, Satish asked me to attend the meeting too.
He introduced me as the consultant to the user. He then asked the user to tell me the request.
I paid attention to the user. After that, Satish invited me to give a suggestion.
I then proposed the solution and Satish asked the user for the feedback.
The user said that Mr. Tay was a computer expert. He was convicted and accepted my proposal.

I remembered that meeting. Satish considered as my boss. He knew the requirement of the user and knew the solution. But he took me as a consultant and let user hear the solution personally from my mouth.
I had experience with a few young scholars. They liked to ask me for ideas and then discussed with users directly.
Satish was professional in management. He did the planning and managed the department. He let us to carry out the detailed works.
When the user knew that I was a computer professional, he would respect and treasure what I suggested. The user would admire and respect Satish because he was the leader of the computer experts.
Those young scholars liked to take credit and were lack of wisdom!

Satish was humane.
My son was born when I worked in CISD for five months.
I took half a day's leave during that week. I stayed overnight in the hospital. Every morning, I went to office early and cleared my work as soon as I could. I then left the office at lunch time to visit my wife and baby. After taking my lunch, I went home to bathe. I went to the hospital again in the evening and stayed there.

One day, I was busy in doing my work during lunch time. Satish came and asked me to visit my wife and baby if that was no urgent job. I could continue to do it the next day.

Our own manageress Mdm Ha was not like that. I thought Satish understood us and he took care of me as I was new to the department.

Two months after the birth of my son, I truly experienced the humanity of Satish.
My wife went for an operation and was then staying in hospital for nineteen days. I worked in the morning and took leave in the afternoon.
During those days, my wife was in hospital and my baby son was with Mother Kaikaew, wife of Thai pastor Visanukorn. I went to hospital to visit my wife at lunch time. After taking my lunch, I went home to have a shower. It was then about evening time. I then went to hospital to visit my wife again. After that, I went to see my son at Pastor Visanukorn's place. When I went home, it was bed time.

For those nineteen days, I put in more effort in my work to catch up with the schedule. I went to and fro the hospital and Visanukorn's place.
Mdm Ha told me that there were people taking care of my wife and I needed not to travel to visit her.
I forced myself to smile. My goodness! I was not that cold-blooded!

When Satish saw me, he reminded me to drive with care and remember to take my meals.
Satish was a good man and a good leader.

Satish never lost his temper in front of me. But he would get angry, he did not show it.
When Mdm Ha took many days' sick leave, I had to cover her duties. She kept the computer system password as her personal treasure. When I needed the password, she refused to release it!
One day, when I was in Satish's office, he telephoned Mdm Ha. He told Mdm Ha that I was carrying out her duties and should let me have the password. Otherwise, she should come back to office to manage the system.

When the Ministry sent Satish to England for further study, we still contact each other through e-mails.
At that time, I was assigned to manage the website. Before launching the website, I requested Satish to see it. He replied that it was very slow in accessing and gave us some suggestions. I then feedback to the vendor to make some improvements. Finally my team member Tor Leong and I had to put in our hands to improve the website.
Although Satish was then not my boss, he still contributed his ideas in improving our work.

After Satish coming back from England, he was posted to another department and we seldom meet.

I left the Ministry and was transferred to a shipbuilding company in 1997. I then did not meet Satish.

Time passed, but I always remember Satish. Satish, a man who used the resources wisely and a good example for my life.

I met Satish at a function on 31.10.2009. I realised he was Satish when he smiled at me.

May God richly bless Satish!
