I received a telephone call on 17th January evening.
"Guess who?"
The voice was very familiar. I immediately thought that
the person must be from Thai Good News Centre, but she
could not be Sister Salli Lamponen.
After listening to the second time of 'Guess who?',
I was very pleased to replied, "Sister Bounmy, are you?"
Sister Bounmy came to Singapore in January and she would like
to meet me on 20th January evening. It was a Saturday.
Sister Bounmy was one of our volunteer workers in Thai Good News Centre
when I was working in the Centre about 15 or 16 years ago.
Sister Bounmy and Sister Salli used to visit the Thai patients in
various hospitals. When they came back to the Centre in the
evening, Sister Bounmy might talk to me for a while.
I remembered very well of what she told me about the life style
of her family. After taking dinner, she would sit down together
with her husband and had a chat. Her husband would tell her about
the office life for that day. She would share with her husband
the visitation to the hospitals. After that, they would thank
God for a happy day and pray to God of their burdens of the day.
Sister Bounmy and her husband went back to England, the hometown
of her husband in 1993. Sometimes they might go to Laos, Sister
Bounmy's hometown for living a couple of months. We kept in touch
by sending Christmas cards to each other every year.
We used to send Christmas cards to each other very early.
Sometimes we sent as early as at the end of November.
Two months after the Christmas of 2004, I was very surprise
to receive a letter from Sister Bounmy. She wrote that her husband
was call to God in early December 2004.
I never imagined that Sister Bounmy would visit Singapore again.
I was too delighted to hear from her and we made a dinner
appointment on 20th January. It was also on her birthday.
I took a MRT ride to Redhill Station that Saturday evening.
After getting out of the station, I was looking for Sister Bounmy for
a while. I later saw her, accompanied by Mary and her husband.
After parting for thirteen years, she was almost hoary.
Four of us went to a Thai restaurant to take our dinner.
Sister Bounmy asked whether I still speak Thai. As I
did not speak the language for many years, I could not
speak fluent Thai nowadays.
The business of the restaurant was very good that evening.
Once after we finished taking dinner, the waiter came to
clear the table, so we left.
We wanted to have a cup of drink at the nearby fast food
centre. But Mary suggested that we went to her place.
Sister Bounmy stayed in Mary's flat for this visit.
We continued our chat at Mary's flat. Sister Bounmy
showed me pictures of her husband and the places they
ever stayed. We also talked about Sister Salli Lamponen.
Sister Salli was working with me in the Thai Good News
Centre in 1989 ~ 1992. I resigned from Thai Good News
Centre at the end of 1992. Sister Salli was transferred
and back to Finland in October 1993. We were thinking of
Sister Salli, but none of us received any letter from her
for many years.
While we were recalling the good old days, Eve called.
She asked Mary to keep me in. She was coming to meet me
because she has not seen me for many years. Eve was also
one of the volunteer workers in our Thai Good News Centre then.
When Eve arrived, she bought barbecued meats for Sister Bounmy.
She also bought three small cakes to celebrate the birthday of
Sister Bounmy.
We gave Sister Bounmy our blessings after she made her birthday wish.
Sister Bounmy had not met my son Solomon. She left Singapore
a few months before Solomon was born. As I ever sent her
Solomon's picture to her many years ago, her impression
of Solomon was still a baby. Actually Solomon is now 13.
Sister Bounmy told me that she prayed for Solomon and me
immediately after receiving my Christmas card and prayer
request last December. I was very touched that she
came all the way from Laos to visit me.
I received an e-mail from Magne, my Norwegian friend,
telling me that he would pray for us too last December.
Thank God for giving me many good friends.
After leaving Thai Good News Centre, our prayer partners
spread all over places. They are in Finland, Norway, England,
Canada, Thailand, and Laos. We hardly have an opportunity
to get together, and we keep in touch with each other
by Christmas cards. We send regards and give our blessings
to each other.
I must have a very peaceful mind that evening.
I slept very soundly that night after so many years.
