My Interest - My Work

I wished to be a teacher when I was studying in primary school, and then desired to be a doctor when I was in secondary school. I never imaged that I would become a computer personnel for my working life.

My first job was a clerical officer with the Public Utilities Board (PUB). I worked there for almost 15 years. I started as an end-user of the computer system. I designed computer forms for transcribing data from documents. The computer department will then used those forms to punch the data into punched cards. I later designed documents which used by both the consumers as well as end-users and by the computer department. In order to fulfill my desire, the Board trained me to be a computer operator. Before I resigned from PUB, I was promoted to a computer programmer and then an Assistant Systems Analyst/Programmer.

I spent about another 10 years with Singapore Computer Systems (SCS) Private Limited, which is now the Singapore Computer Systems Limited. Working as a Systems Analyst, Consultant, and Application Manager, I provided services to a few customers. I developed Inventory Control and Fixed Assets modules of Business Applications System, provided pre-sale support for our Marketing Department. I also conducted Information System Planning Study, customised applications and established the Electronic Data Processing Department for customers.

I then left the company for 3 years and became a missionary.

I was back to the ST Computer Systems and Services Limited in 1993. I provided services to the Ministry of the Environment for 4 years, and posted to the present customer, Singapore Technologies Marine Limited, in July 1997.

I witnessed the computer systems from huge size computer to personal computer, the computer languages from the machine language, FORTRAN, COBOL, BASIC, to the fourth generation languages and now the hypertext markup language.

Working as a computer personnel, I know that the information technology (IT) is advancing very fast. Especially from 1995 till now, the IT advancement in Singapore was so great that if we do not learn every now and then, we will be left out.

What I have never planned for has become my interest, my work!

Great! I was retired in January 2002 as planned!
