Rev. John Nelson

I was baptised by Pastor Nelson on 18th September 1966 at the Queenstown Lutheran Church. I was an active member of the Youth Fellowship during that time. Pastor Nelson always encouraged and guided me in the youth activities. As the youth members were from both of the English and Chinese congregations, we spoke both languages at our meetings.

At one of the meetings, Pastor Nelson requested me to be the interpreter. He would speak English and I would interpret in Mandarin. I was Chinese educated and very seldom spoke English. Hence, I was hesitate. But Pastor Nelson encouraged and convinced me to take up the challenge. I remembered that I had difficulty in interpretation for a few times that evening. And to my very surprise, Pastor Nelson repeated what he said in Cantonese to me, so that I could understand. Although I did not do it very well, Pastor Nelson was glad to see that I complete my job and he did not stop inviting me to be the interpreter since then.

When my wife and son were to be baptised in 1993, I contacted Pastor Nelson at the Bedok Lutheran Church and invited him to baptise them. It was from December 1993 when we have been meeting Pastor Nelson again almost every Sunday. After missing him for about 25 years, I was yearn to learn from Pastor Nelson the ways he tells us the Good News, the manners he makes us felt at home, the fatherly concern he shows to all people, and the approach he takes for us to improve the quality in our work. When he was retired as a Senior Pastor of the Bedok Lutheran Church in June 1995, I felt a deep sadness but will always remember his teaching and good example.

Pastor Nelson is one of the models in my life.
