Teacher, We Miss You!
My Loving Secondary Students

I had a dream with me when going to be a volunteer teacher at the Northern Thailand Mountains.
I could not have the long term stay over there to help the children. For the 60 days with them, I appreciated their love, care and trust in me. It was a sweet memory of their innocence, kindness, and sincerity.

I was surprised and puzzled during the first lesson.
That was the Secondary Three Class. When the retiring volunteer teacher introduced me to the class, it was very quiet. Once he stepped out of the classroom, it was suddenly like a fish market.
I was surprised, but not discouraged. I gave up my 54-year-long community voluntary service in 2014. During those years, I saw all kinds of people and surroundings.

I thanked God that taught me to remember that whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.
God blessed me with an opportunity to provide the loving care to a student. He did not pay attention in the class. He kept looking at the small mirror and squeezing acne on his face. I went to him and told him to clean his face before sleeping. He could then make use of Aloe Vera as skin care product. That little bit of concern made the classmates around him feeling the love of their teacher.

I thanked God for giving me the wisdom to understand the Bible 'Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.'
I brought with me a bottle of Hazeline Snow Moisturising Cream. I bought it from the e-shop as we could not find the cream in the Singapore market any more. I did not give it away, so I went to the shops of the village to look for a similar cream. I could not speak Thai very well. Then a young shopkeeper came. She spoke to me in Mandarin. After that, she pointed at her face and said, "To get rid of these acne?" I was a little embarrassed and nodded my head.
The following week when I was with the same class, I gave the cream to that student. He was surprised. He was moved and said, "Thank you, teacher! Thank you, teacher!"
For that small matter, the story passing round the classmates very soon.

Praise the Lord! For only that small action, the students started to know me and take care of me.

I taught computer course for students of Lower Secondary One to Three, as well as Upper Secondary One to Three. Besides, I taught Chinese Composition for Lower Secondary One class. The students liked to talk in the class, but they started to take care of me and help me.

Every evening we had three lessons. If our computer course was ended at the third lesson, that was the time we were going home after the lesson. Then some of the students would stay at the second floor. They would wait for me to get down the stairs, then switched off the light at the stairs. On Saturday morning, we had the Chinese Composition Class for Secondary One at the Baode Building. When the class was dismissed, a student would carry the backpack containing more than 40 copies of exercise books for me and put it in my office. They were worried that I might fall down when coming down from the extreme-high-step stairs.

A few students asked, "Teacher, will you be back next year? We will be still studying in school."
I came to Thailand as a tourist and I could only stay the maximum of 60 days per year.

Actually, I love to teach. The students really took care of me. But, they were not the principal.
I did not answer to any of them. I just smiled.

We had classes on Saturday morning. In the afternoon, we had arts and other interest groups. They were just like co-curricular activity (CCA) of our Singapore schools. Quite a few times, there were students talking to me after lunch and before CCA hours. Once the CCA time was up, the Discipline Teacher would come and ask them to go. I was not that happy. On weekdays, once the school dismissed, everyone would rush to go home. They did not have time to talk to me. Should it be so serious?

A student asked me to give him one angbao (red package with money given on Chinese New Year for blessing) during Chinese New Year. I did not know the real reason he would like to have it. He said, "Only 20 baht, it is ok."
My thought was rather special. If I gave an angbao to him, I would give one each to other students. I had enough money to give each person 20 baht for almost 200 students. But I had a problem to change so many pieces of 20 baht. Besides, it was also a problem for me to have so many red packages.

There was another girl student wished to have my waistband. She liked the buckle of my waistband -- a running golden horse. Off course I did not give her because I brought only one waistband with me.

The students liked to talk to me, especially the girls. The girls liked to listen to me talking about how to look for a boyfriend. They took me as an advisor.
The girls were more outspoken. They might say words liked "Teacher, we will miss you!", "Teacher, your eyes are beautiful!", "Teacher, please come back next year." The boys would not say it. They only said, "Teacher, you are beautiful!" Then they would look at me.

I selected one student from the Secondary One Chinese Composition Class and wished that the school would continue to train him. So that he could take part in the Competition. I selected another student in our Chinese Composition Interest Group. She could be an excellent writer. But she told me, "Teacher, I am graduating soon."

On my last Saturday in school, there was a celebration. The Principle presented me a certificate of appreciation. After that, she asked the students three questions. As those in the Celebration were my students, so for the question of "who ever attended his class?", the response was very loud. Then to the questions of "the teaching attitude of the teacher" and "the loving care of the teacher", the support was great and positive.
Thank you very much for your love and affirmation, my loving students!
