Speaking in Tongues
Traveling with God

We went to Thailand in May 1991 for a mission study trip. When we were in Ubon, sometimes Pastor Magne would bring us to visit the villagers. Sometimes another missionary sister would bring us.

One day, when the missionary sister brought us to visit a church member, a housewife. The housewife told us about her illness. Then we prayed and asked God to heal her.

After the prayer, the missionary sister asked me, "Do you have any word to say to this sister?"
I could not speak good Thai then. I spoke to the missionary sister in English and she would interpret in Thai. I mentioned about the lily, lotus flower. When the flower dried up, not to take the seeds.
The missionary sister did not quite understand. So, I had to use my hands to help in describing.
Before finishing explanation, the church member took out a lotus pod from underneath her bed and showed us.
"Yes, yes! That was the one. Don't eat the seeds."

When we went back to the Church, the missionary sister asked, "Do you understand tongues?"
"I don't understand."
"Oh!"

Our missionaries from Norway and Finland pray in tongues.
When I had the prayer with them. I spoke Mandarin and they spoke tongues.

Last year when I attended a Cell Group meeting, a Christian asked me, "Do you speak tongues?"
I mentioned what happened when we had our mission in Thailand in 1991.
At those days, my wife who was with our mission team asked me a few times, "What (language) did you pray?"
She was always next to me during that trip. But she said that she did not understand my prayer although I said I prayed in Mandarin.
That Christian did not ask anymore.

When I was with the Thai Good News Centre 30 years ago, one of our volunteers always wanted to lay hand on me and to pray that I could speak tongues. I told him frankly that I knew what gift God blessed me. I would make use of God's gift to help others.
He continued with what he wanted. Once, I was annoyed. Then I 'he-li-ka-la-ba' seemed like praying in front of him, he was shocked. From that day on, he did not tell me about praying in tongues.

Paul wrote﹕
6. brothers and sisters, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you,
unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction?

12. So it is with you. Since you are eager for gifts of the Spirit,
try to excel in those that build up the church.
