Picking Up Red Lucky Seed
Our Collection

(This article was written in November 1990 and translated into English on 15 June 2015)

I started my studies in Singapore Bible College in 1990. We had our class at the branch near Newton Circle. Every Thursday we had our morning assembly in our main college in Adam Road.

When we had the Thursday morning assembly, I used to drive to our College early. I liked to be at the campus earlier. There were a few Red Lucky Seed trees. I would pick up the seeds fallen on the ground. Weeks after weeks, I formed the habits of picking up the seeds.

1. I would not pick up those in the muddy ground. When there was heavy rain the prior night, the seeds would fall on the ground. Those on the cement ground would be clean. Those on the muddy ground were dirty. Hence, I did not want the dirty ones.

2. I would pick up those attached to the pods. I picked up the pod and collected the seeds and then looked for another pod. Sometimes I collected all the pods and kept the seeds at one time.

3. Sometimes there were pods still hanging to the branches. I would take those branches on the ground, threw up and hit down the pods.

4. After looking for the pods, I would pick up those seeds on the dry ground.

5. I also checked those pods left over by others. Some seeds might still left with the pods.

6. I threw away those seeds were not look nice.

7. Then I searched amongst the thick growths of grass. Some seeds or pods might hide in there.

8. Finally I would look through carefully those on the grass.

9. Initially I gave some of the seeds to my classmates. But I later kept all of them as they looked very nice.

10. While looking for the seeds, I needed to be sharp and have a keen sense of whereabouts they were.

We studied in the College learning how to bring people to God. From my habits of picking up Red Lucky Seed, I wondered whether an evangelist would have these attitudes.

I did not pick up those seeds on the muddy ground. Sometimes we cannot judge a person by his appearance. For those who are untidy, do we look down upon them? My classmates and myself should not be like that. Because what we studied was to bring the good news to the grassroots people.

Those who are not prominent, do we notice them?

Those who believe in what we preach but stay far away from our church, do we refer them to other church nearer to them?

I have related picking up the Red Lucky Seed to proclaiming of Good News, is it funny?
