The result of
2009 Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of
Education (Ordinary Level) Examination was released on 11 January 2010.
My son Solomon attained the result that reached my requirement.
When he discussed with me on the studies after his GCE O-level Examination,
he wished that he could take up the course of Film, Sound and Video with
Ngee Ann Polytechnic.
He was interested in media-related subject. He hoped that he could do the
study and at the same time carry out practical work that he was interested.
He expressed that even if he had to study in Junior College, he would do
his best. But it seemed like he worked hard just for the A-level Certificate
and that would not be meaningful.
I agreed with what he said. I supported his decision and requested him
to achieve his best result in his O-level Examination.
There are parents having different idea from us. They think that
if you do not have a good result in O-level Examination, than you
have to continue your study in polytechnic.
If you have very good result, you will continue your study in
Junior Colleges and after that in universities.
It seems that those completed their study in polytechnic will
not advance anymore.
I requested my son to achieve good result and he would be qualified
to study in Junior College. But when he decided to study in polytechnic,
other will not pass any remarks.
When Solomon was at Primary school, he selected EM2 when he was also given
a choice to study in EM1. He explained to me the reason of his choice and
I supported him.
When the day Solomon decided to choose EM2, he was only ten years old.
His mother was unhappy. She thought the same as most of the parents
we met. They asked their children to get into EM1 when there was a choice.
At the end of that year, some of the parents told me that my son and I made
the right choice.
Solomon was sixteen years old now and his mother was unhappy that he
decided to study in polytechnic.
Solomon told me that only one aunty Aiyu supported his decision.
I shared with Solomon of my life-long experience and gave me
encouragement.
We should have our own decision and cannot live under the shadow of others.
I did not have an opportunity to do my further studies in any university.
But I completed my part-time MBA course.
I did not have an opportunity to study medical science in a university.
I am now a volunteer to the elders in releasing their physical tiredness and pain.
I did not have any degree in computer science. I was a 'computer' and
computer expert in many people's mind.
I was only completed my Pre-University Two study in a Chinese School.
But I was the consultant for presidents of organisations as well as
for director of departments for many organisations.
Solomon has some of the same interests as me, such as computer and photography.
I ever explained to relatives on computer-related issues. They looked blurred
after my explanation. I then asked my then 13-year-old son to explain.
After that they smiled and said, "Oh! Like that."
I started to learn using camera after I worked for a couple of years.
Solomon owned his single lens reflex (SLR) camera when he was 12 years old.
He took media as his CCA when he was at primary school.
When he was at Secondary Three, he and his team won
a Platinum Award in the Schools Digital Media Awards.
Some of my friends knew about Solomon's achievement, they said that
the Pupil surpasses the Master. In Chinese, it was
「青出于蓝」
Indigo blue is extracted from the indigo plant
(but is better than the plant it comes from).
I was pleased to hear that, but on the other hand, I was sorry.
I was able to read the story of The Dream of the Red Chamber when
I was at Secondary One.
But Solomon sometimes could not even make use of the correct proverbs.
As I used to help him in his Chinese subject, I thought it was a failure
in my coaching.
