I have moved several times since the day I was at Secondary One.
I threw away all of my Primary School textbooks and kept only
one of my Secondary One school textbook. That was for the subject of
Ethics.
When we were at the Primary School, we studied a subject of Morals.
We learned the standards of behaviour as well as principles of right and wrong.
The mercy of Sakyamuni and the universal love of Jesus impressed me
very much.
We also learned to respect our parents, love our siblings and friends.
We had the subject of "Ethics" in our Secondary One. The textbook was
published by the Malaya Press Limited. It was for the Secondary One Study
of the Chinese Schools.
The book consisted of five chapters and each chapter consisted of several sections.
There were all together thirty-four sections. It was suggested to teach
a section per week and the pupils could finish learning the book within a year.
The five chapters were:
- Introduction
- Self-cultivation
- Individual and Family
- Individual and the Society
- Individual and the Nation
In the Introduction chapter, it explained the meaning of ethics.
Ethics is the standards of our behaviour and we should make use of
what we learn. We learn to cultivate our moral character. We learn
the way to handle matters and to due with people.
We learn to make a clear distinction between right and wrong.
We learn to distinguish good from evil.
Besides taking care of our good lives, we have to live with other in harmony.
So as we can maintain a peaceful society.
The self-cultivation included cleanliness, politeness, modesty, diligence,
frugality, honesty, courage, will-power, carefulness, calmness,
introspection and self-control.
With the family, we have to respect the elders and love our siblings. We also have to
respect the elders of other families.
We have to be impartial, generous, sympathetic, helpful, cooperative,
unselfish, self-possessed, tolerate and considerate when getting along with
others in the society.
We consider the truth, loyalty and sense of responsibility when we love our nation.
