The Singapore Arts Festival 2009 returns between 15 May and 14 June this year,
showcasing 26 core productions and over 400 free outreach performances,
exhibitions and special events that promise to enthrall, engage and uplift
the spirits.
Pasar Theatre is one of the outreach performances of Asian Showcase.
It was presented at the Kreta Ayer Square in Chinatown from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
on 23rd and 24th May.
The participating bodies included Kityang Huay Kwan Teochew Opera Group
(揭阳会馆潮剧团), Siong Leng Musical Association (湘灵音乐社), D.Lab,
Johnny Ng (黄家强) and Liu Xiao Yi (刘晓义), Jessica Tan (陈诗婷),
Ling Ying (凌莺), Ng Chee Yang (黄智阳) - Overall Champion of
Session 1 Campus Superstar (2006).
The Pasar Theatre was directed by Jalyn Han. The story was about an
18-year-old girl Ah Qin, played by Tang Wan Jun, who came to Southeast Asia
after enduring immense hardships during the Second World War in search of a
better life. As with most immigrant Chinese in Singapore, Chinatown was
the first place Ah Qin set foot on.
In the early 1950s, Chinatown was a bona fide town full of activities.
She discovered classic forms of traditional street performances that seemed
to be always going on.
Follow the vivacious and wholesome young Ah Qin, audiences would enjoy the
traditional crosstalk, Chinese Opera, Chinese dance and the traditional arts.
A black and white outdoor film 'Mambo Girl' was screened on 23 May evening
and another film 'Cinderella and Her Little Angels' on 24 May evening.
