About ten volunteer workers were invited to celebrate the Chinese New Year with the elders. The gathering was held in Taman Jurong NTUC Eldercare Centre on 6 February 2009 morning. Some of the volunteer workers prepared the vegetarian disc of raw fish and some foods as well as dessert for the lunch. We started our celebration at 10 o'clock. The staff and volunteer workers wished the elders with New Year blessing. After that the elders took part in two competitions. First, they used the materials given to make a basket with oranges. Then they made the fire crackers. Although they were old, they made it within the time limit. The volunteer workers performed a number of variety shows. I sang a Teochew Opera song "Reunion at the capital" as requested earlier by the elders. Although we did not have a karaoke system, the staff and elders were enjoy in performing as the opera artists. Their performance made me forgot the song and I had to refer to my note which I got ready on hand. An elder woman sang us Teochew and Cantonese songs without words and music. The other elder man sang a folk song of "Serenade of the Green Island"(《绿岛小夜曲》). Some volunteer workers performed folk dance of the mountain tribe, Gongfu fan dance and Myarmar folk dance. When we were singing the New Year songs, the Manager Anne distributed the red package of good luck to the elders, volunteer workers and staff. We had our lunch with the elders. As some of the elders were weak with their legs, the volunteer workers helped in mixing the raw fish. Then they served the elders with delicious lunch and dessert. The gathering we had in the Eldercare Centre was the most enjoyable one I had amongst my four gatherings this year.
