New Year's Gathering is common in Singapore.
The members of the clans, associations and alumnus get together during
Chinese New Year. They celebrate the New Year with some recreational
activities and meals.
The first disc of the meal is usually the raw fish salad.
Slides of raw fish are to be mixed with the various vegetables.
Some sauces and crispy crackers would also be added.
Before taking that disc, everyone would stand up and use the
chopsticks to mix the vegetables and raw fish. At the same time,
everyone would say some prosperous words.
That is what the Cantonese 'lou hei' (drag up) meant.
I have attended four of these gatherings recently.
