He hailed the win as a great honour and privilege for Singapore and every Singaporean.

For the first time, the Olympics flame would be in South-east Asia, and in Singapore. We would be the focus of a new era of sports development for Singapore, for Soth-east Asia, and for the Olympic movement.

We worked very hard for seven months. It was a national effort, but more than that, it was a people's effort.

We had 2 1/2 years to prepare for the Youth Olympic Games. It would be going to be challenging, but it would be going to be full of excitement and achievements.
