Ice Kachang
Our Dessert

Ice Kachang is one of our favourite desserts. Kachang is bean in Malay. I enjoyed taking Ice Kachang. It was cool and tasty.

We hardly had an opportunity to take Ice Kachang when we were young.

Ice Kachang was one of the luxuries for us more than 50 years ago. The hawker had to manually shave the ice.

First, the hawker added a bit of ingredients in a bowl. The ingredients were as follows:
red beans, cooked till soft
sweet corn kernels
lengkong (jelly) cube
agar-agar strand, cooked
palm seeds (Atap seeds 亚答子)

Then, topped generously with shaved ice in a shape of a steep mountain, forming a mound that was high in the centre. Spooned some red and brown syrup and poured evaporated milk evenly over the ice.

Nowadays, shaving of ice is no more manually. It was done by machine. Fast and easy!

There are many different flavours of Ice Kachang nowadays. Some of them made this dessert more delicious, some are not.
