What Bus You Take?
Taking Bus in Singapore

When I overheard a Singaporean explained to his friend from China how to take bus, I was amazing. That was not a problem for us, but it was something for a foreigner to learn it.

Our children used to hear what we said when they were taking bus with us. They hence spoke “the same language” and could get along with others.

“Look! That is number thirty (30).”
“The one coming is one-four-three (143). Do not say one hundred and forty-three.”
The China friend looked at the buses and listen with care.

After a while, the China friend seemed understood and said, “I see! For the number with two digits, we say out the number. Such as seventy eight (78) or seventy nine (79). For the number with three digits, we just read the number by digit. Such as one-four-three (143) and one-seven-six (176). We do not say one hundred and forty-three or one hundred and seventy-six.”

“Yes, right! But for numbers like one hundred and two hundred, we say one hundred and two hundred. Don't say one-zero-zero or two-zero-zero.”

We were used to it. But there might be different in other countries.

We used to say what “number” of bus we take and not route. The way of reading the bus number based on the number of digits of the bus number.

It might be strange for a foreigner to learn it if it is different from how they read it. But it is easy to learn when there is an explanation.

If we are willing to learn and speak “the same language” as the local, we will be able to get along with them.
